When director Michael Arden decided to revive Alfred Uhry’s ‘Parade’ on Broadway in 2023, he was onto something.
Leaving deep-rooted impressions on critics, theatre enthusiasts, naysayers, and laypersons alike, ‘Parade’’s riveting tale of faith, humanity, and devotion in the face of hardship, underlined by Jason Robert Brown’s masterful score, and delivered by a world-renowned cast, received two Tony Awards for Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score, six Drama Desk Awards, and a New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Musical.
‘Parade’ is a dramatized account of the 1913 trial, conviction and eventual murder of Jewish-American factory worker Leo Frank for the murder of a 13-year old girl, as a result of defective legal proceedings, media sensationalism and misinformation. Rooted in prejudice, fraud, bigotry, injustice, and mob mentality, the tale of Leo Frank serves as social commentary on, and testament of the eerie timelessness of this subject matter, even a century after the true events took place. Even though ‘Parade’s tale has an incredible depth, boasts emotional performances, and is poignant, is it also gloriously hopeful, gorgeous, and filled with wonderful charisma.
