Leo Frank’s tale needs little introduction: It is 1913, and a young Jewish American couple is faced with trials and tribulations when the husband, Leo Frank, is faced with conviction for the murder of a 13-year old factory worker.
As a result of a flawed trial fuelled by division, bigotry, mob mentality, and dishonesty, Leo Frank is imprisoned, and eventually lynched. This regrettable true event shaped the establishment of Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish civil rights organization, and on the opposite end, the Ku Klux Klan.
Even though the tale is heartrending and sometimes shocking, ‘Parade’ is art at its very best, delving into complex human emotions while being filled with hope, and is guaranteed to ring true long after the curtain falls.
Not only does it serve as a stark reminder that history often repeats itself, but also reminds of the power of art to call into question, illuminate, and reflect. No audience member leaves ‘Parade’ unchanged and unmoved, goes to bed without thinking about the relevance of this tale, and unimpressed with what they have just witnessed.
At the hands and from the minds of composer Jason Robert Brown, writer Alfred Uhry, and director Michael Arden, a wonderfully memorable theatrical experience was created. that one production that everybody must see at least once in their lives.
If there were any doubts, let the proof be on the accolade shelf. To date ‘Parade’ has racked up no less than four Tony Awards, seven Drama Desk Awards, two Outer Critics Circle Awards, among a large amount of nominations.
From the precision in portraying some heavy thematic material to the compelling score moving from profound to showstopper in the blink of an eye; from the visually striking imagery to the charisma and jaw-dropping performances by the stellar cast; from the captivating story; to the moments of theatrical spectacle that lifts the production to the next level - ‘Parade’ is marching on, and long afterwards you’ll think about how the outcome of it can be changed for people today.
