The tale is well-known: It is 1913, and a young Jewish American couple is faced with trials and tribulations when the husband, Leo Frank, is wrongfully convicted for the murder of a 13-year old factory worker.
After an extensive, yet flawed trial heavily influenced by inaccuracy, discrimination, media sensation, deceit, and false information, Leo Frank is imprisoned, and eventually lynched. This unfortunate true event shaped the establishment of Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish civil rights organization, and on the opposite end, the Ku Klux Klan.
Even though Leo Frank’s tale is eerily timeless, horrific, and gut-punching, ‘Parade’ is a true work of art, exploring faith, humanity, and devotion, and is guaranteed to ring true long after the curtain falls.
Not only does it serve as a stark reminder that history often repeats itself, but also reminds of the power of art to question, illuminate, and reflect. It’s been over a century since Leo Frank’s trial, and still audience members are moved and changed by the poignancy of this tale.
When Alfred Uhry’s magnificent book, Jason Robert Brown’s exceptional music and lyrics, and Michael Arden’s direction came together in a gorgeous hotpot of true art, the remarkably layered, emotional, and passionate ‘Parade’ was born. that one production that everybody must see at least once in their lives.
If there were any doubts, let the proof be on the accolade shelf. To date ‘Parade’ has racked up no less than four Tony Awards, seven Drama Desk Awards, two Outer Critics Circle Awards, among a large amount of nominations.
From the hair-raising relevance of the themes ‘Parade’ touches on to the compelling score featuring much adored songs such as ‘This is Not Over Yet’, ‘The Old Red Hills of Home’, and ‘All the Wasted Time’; from the exceptional visuals to the charisma and jaw-dropping performances by the world-renowned cast; from the enthralling tale with the fierce love between husband and wife at the core; to the the breathtaking display of artistic genius - ‘Parade’ is marching on, and will leave you completely at a loss for words.
