With rampant corruption, unemployment, and abuse in 19th century France, a sentenced thief going by the name of Jean Valjean severs his parole after a significant period of time on the chain gang. Because of the actions of a good samaritan, Jean Valjean is free to make his next move and invents a brand new identity as Monsieur Madeleine, eventually rising to become a factory owner and a mayor. Though initially successful in building his new life, hidden from his rival Javert, Valjean is unfortunately involved in the dangerous political landscape of Paris, wherein he is compelled to find solutions that would affect both himself and his adopted daughter, Cosette.
This tale of Les Mis, filled with justice and redemption, has been going on for several decades in several locations all over the world. Ever since its debut in French theatre in the 1980s, it has secured its place not just as part of the most unbelievable plays of the past 4 decades, but also part of the shows with the most awards as well. In its worldwide premiere alone, it swept the awards season of the Tony Awards, with 12 nominations in total and 8 out of 12 wins. Les Mis won as Best Direction of a Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting Design, and Best Featured Actor and Actress in a Musical.
