BACKGROUND

The Phantom of the Opera opened in London in 1986, followed by a tantalizing Broadway premiere two years later. The musical continued to run until 2023 at the Majestic Theatre in New York. But the legacy lives on as the musical soars across major venues all around the world. This year’s run will light up several major cities in the US and Canada. PLOT

The famous opera house in Paris is about to stage its most spectacular performance yet. The Phantom is a mysterious figure living underneath the opera house within the catacombs. Known as a musical genius, he influences the outcome of the performances. One moment he causes an accident to scare the lead performer, thereby making a young soprano Christine Daae to take over the lead role. The Phantom becomes obsessed with Christine Daae, meanwhile, she calls him her “Angel of Music.” However, Christine falls in love with her childhood friend Raoul, causing immense jealousy on the Phantom. He abducts her, but her compassion for the masked man may be the key to changing his heart. Find out more if you catch the Phantom of the Opera at the Des Moines Civic Center!

REVIEWS

Being the longest running Broadway musical of all time, The Phantom of the Opera has garnered a ton of reviews but the marks continue to be glowing even after four decades. “There’s a reason it’s been running for 35 years and that’s the tunes,” wrote the Guardian, “There are reprises and motifs everywhere, and even similar melodies in two of the big songs.”

Meanwhile, BroadwayWorld has showered its review with amazing words about the musical in a recent US based performance, “Nearly 40 years after its Broadway premiere, The Phantom of the Opera continues to cast its spell.” with a grand spanding production, the writer added, “The now and future PHANTOM fandom is in excellent hands.”

Theater Mania aptly titled their review, “The Phantom of the Opera is as thrilling as ever on the road.” The writer continued, “The most delightful surprise of all is just how few changes have been made to the show’s design. Down to every detail, Björnson’s costumes look so familiar that they could easily be taken for the Broadway costumes.”

Lastly, the New York Post delivered this laudatory review, “This is not simply one of the longest-running Broadway musicals – it is, more important, one of the all-time best Broadway musicals. It delivers.”
