S.E. Hinton’s retro classic ‘The Outsiders’ was a literary staple in every single middle and high school English class|has been one of those books everybody need to read at least once in their lives since it was first released}, and even though some eyebrows were raised at the groundbreaking content flexing both muscle and tenderness at the same time, we were all moved by the relevance of the tale of Tonyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, Sodapop Curtis, Cherry Valance and the others.
The question is, however, will the musical be able to fill the shoes of the iconic novel?
And the answer is a resounding yes! Since ’The Outsiders’ much anticipated premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse and whirlwinding into Broadway’s Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre in 2024, ‘The Outsiders’ took a firm hold of every audience member, making them fall in love with the beloved story all over again. The intricate amalgamation of story, sound, lights, and movement, topped by music that is quickly becoming the new song for misfits, guaranteed to linger long after the curtain has fallen.
Add a 60s-sounding score tinged with folk influences and a dash of pop-country masterfully crafted by Jamestown Revival’s Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance alongside Justin Levine, delivered in the breathtaking voices of a stellar cast peppered with debuts, a bountiful serving of captivating visual imagery, choreography that will make you wonder whether ballet of violence is a thing, a gritty, yet stunning warehouse-like set, and a fiery, visceral spin on the violence, and top it with creative choices that flexes every single muscle and pops every vein, and you have a fresh new musical that is destined to become one of Broadway’s favorites.
‘The Outsiders’ ticks all the boxes and then some: the excitement of both newness and familiarity oozing into a superb theatrical production, the emotional rollercoaster of being young and the hardships of have-nots in a world of have-its, questions about the vulnerability of teenage boys to violence and harm, the fragility of life and love, and the struggles of having a lot of heart and remaining truthful in an unkind world, that moment you grasp that you’re actually witnessing one of the world’s best, latest productions and the realization that every single award that came in the direction of ‘The Outsiders’ was well deserved - including four Tony Awards, an Outer Critics Circle Award, two Drama Desk Awards, a Theatre World Award, and a Chita Rivera Award.
It’s undeniable: ‘The Outsiders’ is an outsider stepping into the inner-circle of top Broadway productions.
